Pam asks about horse with fecal liquor…

Hi Dr. Dan,
I have a 13 year old Hanoverian that has loose stools and squirts fecal liquor that runs down his legs.  If he has gas, the fecal liquor squirts out.

Sometimes his stools will be formed but soft other times they will be very loose but not soupy.  This has been an ongoing problem for several years.  It cleared when I moved him to a different place for one year.  I moved him back to the same place and he was fine for about one year and now the problem is back again.

The vet doesn't seem that concerned about it, but I am.  When the liquor squirts he will get anxious as he passes the gas and then calms right after.  I have tried just about everything I can think of and have researched continously.  I have used all types of wormers and none help.  I have used several types of probiotics, no improvement.

I have used psyllium, no change.  I stopped all supplements, no change.  He gets timothy and bermuda hay.   I tried herbs, vitamins, grapefruit seed extract, clay, bentonite, diatamacous earth, digestive aids, oat bran, oat flour, b vitamins, natural anti-inflammatories, enzymes, Kocci Free and anything else that might help.  I have found nothing that helps.  He appears normal, eats well, is exercised regularly, has fresh water daily, turnout, etc.  He is a happy horse other than this issue. He lives in a 40×60 sand paddock.

I am at my wits end. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.   Let me know if you need further information.

Thank you,
Pam

I see many with such. If you will follow the feeding advise at www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com to the "T" and info at www.WormCheck.com chances are great you will have a new horse.

Since this has been going on so long and so many things have been used you will need to add for additional support our Gut Check supplement (so much more than probiotics) and our Aller Check (to help get rid of all the past junk such s dewormers etc and help the gut itself too) No other supplements or food except the oats and what suggested her. Deworming only if positive fecal results too.

Thanks for asking. Get back with me after a month or so on the above.

Jamie asked about “Diet and Vaccinations”

Dear Dr. Dan,

We have a 2 1/2 year old Straight Eqyptian Arabian Gelding, Rami.  We are currently boarding him at a place that runs everything traditionally (regular worming and shots).  He is out in the pasture 24/7.  We want to take him off that regimen and raise him naturally. We are new horse owners..we have only had Rami for over a year ( I won him at Charity Action:) – he is my dream horse and we love him).  So we are learning as we go.  He was raised on Strategy.  He came to us when he was  little over a year old.  We only feed him once a day Strategy mixed with a vitamin/mineral supplement we bought from Horsetech – what they recommended, long with flaxseed, a probiotic and some Vit C.  The rest of time he is out in the pasture.  He will start hay again soon.

After meeting one of your reps at the World EQ Games here in Lexington, KY, we tried your Red Cal. Rami loved it.  Then we read about your feeding program and are going to that next.

My questions for you:

Someone said because Arabians are warmblooded, taking Rami to Oats could be a problem is this true? Or can I do w hat I was doing with the Strategy and just give him some to take down the"Just Add Oats,  Weight Check Oil and Health Check( I thought it would be good to add this to his diet, too).  Second, the people we board with are vaccinating twice or more a year.  Does he really need all those shots? Will I endanger him if I don't vaccinate, but the other horses are vaccinated regularly?   Is there a point where you don't really need to vaccinate anymore because the horse has built up an immunity like they are discovering with other animals such as dogs? So you can just do nosodes or titers to check out their immunity?

I understand you don't vaccinate your horses. Personally that would be my preference, but as long as we are at this boarding place, what do you suggest?

They don't require us to vaccinate by the way.  And this past spring, I didn't give Rami the Rabies or the West Nile Shot everyone else received. He only had the tetanus.  I do muscle testing and I didn't get that he needed the other shots.  Now the people where I board just gave shots to their horses again. They did not buy shots for us and told us to contact the vet to pick up what we need – we have a very traditional Vet who works for Rood and Riddle here.  I haven't found anyone who is holistic yet.

Sorry for such the long post, but I would deeply appreciate your perspective on all this. I really want to raise a healthy horse:).  One more complication to the matter – we may be moving to the Davidson, NC area in late December. I know I will have to transport him via a horse transport service – we don't have a trailer yet.

I am assuming I will have to get him specific shots to transport him across the state line? Do you use homeopathics to help combat the effects?

Any other thoughts on what we can not do regarding the traditional vaccinations in this case?

Thank you so much for your help and time.  All the best, Jamie

Thanks for asking!! No vaccines are required for transport…. Only coggins test and health certificate.

Personally I don't vaccinate ANYTHING for ANYTHING under ANY circumstances unless required by law. Of course I am not the norm. I don't use nosodes as they would have to given monthly to "maybe" help. I would use if there were an outbreak close of whatever. As a "classical homeopath, this would be the proper way to utilize)  Titers are not yet commonly done for horses and really don't know any labs that have enough normals to determine efficacy.

Oats are great and perfect for any horse. Commercial feed is not so u are definitely on the right track. You won't need any other supplements or flax with the feeding program.

Please go to www.wormcheck.com about deworming info too.

I am so glad your facility doesn't require vaccines and deworming!!!!

Again, thanks!

Dr Dan

Debbie with questions about goat feeding and worming…

I am getting 2 4 week old Nigerian Dwarf goats and would like to know what to feed them and what supplement they might need.  I also want to know what you recommend for worming them and if they NEED shots?  I have never had goats before.  I have 2 horses on your basic feeding program and bug check.  I recall reading somewhere that goats can also use the red-cal.  Any info would be helpful.

Red cal for sure free choice, worm check if needed. I would probably just get a feed balanced for goats. Our just add oats has too much copper so don’t use it unless you just use a pinch with oats. Our weight oil would be fine (tea soon or so daily). And our bug Check is great too.  Hope this helps.

Dr Dan,
Thanks for the info.  One more question on the worming. I was told that goats need vigourous worming. You recommended worm check "if needed".  Should I be doing fecal exams on the goats as well as my horses?  Worm check would be the only sufficient wormer required?  Now when using the worm check, how much of it do you use for a goat? They are small Nigerian Dwarf goats. I do use the Bug Check for my horses and would like to know a quantity for the goats to feed daily.

One last question, do you have to give any shots to goats?

Debbie H.

Fecals- YES on all species. Amount of Worm Check should be 1/4 tube but you still need fecals and I suggest monthly until you know that they are consistently negative or low amounts. I don’t give vaccinations to any species unless required by law period so you would need to ask someone else as to what is "ordinary". thanks for asking! As for amount of Bug Check i would give as much as it takes to help control.. any amount is only healthy. I would start with 1/4 oz or so daily and work up as needed. i would for sure add RED CAL to the routine… "free choice" . Thanks for asking Debbie!

Worming

I got my mare this spring. She turned 13 in July. When I bought her, the owner wormed her before I picked her up with a very strong wormer. I have since used Worm Check on her. I have now had

two fecal tests done, and both have tested positive for a low amount of strongyles. What could be the cause of this? My friend/barn mate who uses chemical wormers had a fecal done and it showed no worms. I

know I will get flack for using a non chemical wormer since my horse is the one with worms!

So I would like to have an answer ready for them! Please help!

Kelley

Horses are like people. All are different with different immune systems etc. Using chemicals in my opinion are like shooting their immune system even more thus requiring more and more and stronger and stronger products. Even resistant species develop. For instance nothing even works for goats from such over use of chemicals.

Most parasitoligists even think a low count on parasites is required and good since it helps actually build the immunity. I would go to www.wormcheck.com. There may be more info there that will help. There is an article called "oh crap" that I wrote for wellness magazine too. You’ll find it there as well.

Thanks For Asking!

Worming Foals…

I have two large foals that are about 7 and 7 1/2 weeks old.

I have purchased your natural wormer for the mares and have been using it for years.  How should I worm the foals? Is the natural wormer ok for them does it include tape worms and how much would I give them.  I can measure them for their weight of course. Or should I be using something else or a combination of something else.

How often should I be worming them?

Thank you,

Janice

fecals fecal fecals… regardless of what you use. (monthly for foals) 1/2 tube for the foals. any amount is only healthy regardless.

Please do go to www.wormcheck.com and read the article I did for wellness magazine called “Oh Crap.

Find it at http://wormcheck.com/?p=3

It should answer even more questions that may arise.
