John asks about encouraging growth of feather

Hi Dr. Dan,  Do you have any tips for encouraging the growth of feather? Getting ready for a horse show.

John S.

Hi John,

The RED CAL along with the Hoof Check is a good combination for this. Of course as much as the overall feeding program that you can adhere to will benefit also. I'm not where I can check, but seems like I remember seeing an order a few days ago with a couple of the feeding program supplements- which is good and I appreciate it!

So again be sure providing at least Red Cal and I would for sure add Hoof Check for it is more loaded  with specifics for connective tissue growth (mane and hoofs similar structure believe it or not) ..methionine, lysine, biotin, enzymes etc.

Good luck at the show, keep me posted and thanks again!

Dr. Dan

Eileen asks this for her Horse with soft frogs…

Hi Dr. Dan,

Thanks for all your previous help with my horse and dog.  I have another question regarding my horse.  He has a history of laminitis, and has very soft frogs, and deep crevices at the back of his frogs up into his bulbs that stay soft and moist and result in thrush.  My farrier was here and suggested I use pine tar or turpentine, but I was looking at your Grape Balm Hoof Healer.  Would this product be applicable to his current feet issues?

Thanks,
Eileen

Absolutely Eileen.

Grape Balm Hoof Healer has been a great "natural" alternative for many through the years.

Good to hear from you and Thanks for asking!

Dr. Dan

Grape Balm Hoof Healer 1 lb.

All natural alternative to chemical containing hoof products
Almost every other hoof product on the market contains petroleum, turpentine or acetone and some even formaldehyde. Wouldn’t an all-natural alternative make more sense – especially if it really works? How about if it effectively treats thrush in one or two treatments? What about if it re-moisturizes a hoof in one or two treatments and keeps them that way by using only once or twice a week? Well here it is – even packaged in an easy to use brush jar. Because this product is more like a gel in consistency it doesn’t leave tracks in the barn either. Also it won’t freeze and it doesn’t get thin in the summer. It does smell a little, but this is better than smelling acetone or formaldehyde and it is sure much better for your lungs! It is also great for nail hole dressing.

Colleen asks about care for Hoof injury

Another horse struck at my horse and caught him right at the coronet band, taking a chunk of hoof about the size of a quarter. My vet, who uses many Natural products, treated and bandaged his wound, which I continued for 5 days. It is healing nicely and he doesn't favor it. However, the flies seem to congregate at the site, so I am applying Tri-Care. He gets oats with Just Add Oats X 2, Weight Check oil, along with Bug Check.

Is there any product I can rub on the hoof and coronet band area (I do have both Marigold and Grapeseed salve) that may speed up the healing and toughen the exposed hoof area, as well as repel the flies?

Thank you.
Colleen

Our Grape Balm product. You won't need the tri-care.

If ever you have "fresh" wounds start with our Marigold product then follow with Marigold. At your point now, just start with the Grape Balm.

Thanks for asking Colleen!

Krista asks about mare’s urine/pasture grass “burns”

Dr. Dan … This will be our fourth summer owning my daughter's Zippo Pine Bar bred Appaloosa mare, Hanna. Since we have owned her, I've noticed circular pattern burn spots to our pastures. I've not experienced this with any of the other horses we have owned. She also has loose manure when she's in heat. Blood work and a urinalysis didn't yield any abnormalities.

She gets 24 hour access to rotational pastures, and Timothy pellets, just enough to carry her Bug Check supplement (though I will be purchasing the field version and will discontinue the Timothy pellets). The only other supplements she has been on is a hoof supplement because she has bad feet with quarter cracks. I discontinued the hoof supplement last fall because it didn't seem to be helping enough to support the expense.

I also have a QH gelding, grulla, who is fed the same, except he gets paprika and kelp to keep him dark. We purchased him last fall, so I know the grass burns are not from him. They are both a good weight. I did just start feeding the Bug Check this spring, so I know it's not causing her urine problem.

Is there anything I can feed the mare to balance her urine pH? I know there is a supplement for dogs that contains yucca, but I did try feeding her 1 oz. daily of a yucca supplement last summer, and it didn't seem to help. Was I just not feeding enough, or should I try something else?

Help, please! She's literally killing my pastures!

Krista

Definitely stop the hoof supplement as mentioned. Other than ours- Most are way  out of balance anyway mineral wise.  I expect the Bug Check "Field Formula" will help get back in balance and may very well help the urine situation too.  But, I would also suggest our Hoof Check supplement.  You will have new hoofs and a healthier horse.

Keep me posted and thanks for asking Krista!

Sharon asks about her horse’s cut…

Hi there, I have just found a cut to my horses back fetlock, which appears to be a day old, I have bathed it and put antiseptic on it. Can you please advise me what else u can do. And when I should start riding/excersising her again. There is no lession, bad smell ect. and it seems to be healing.

Sharon A.

Sharon, our ugly, smelly Grape Balm ointment is the best antiseptic and healing substance I know. As for when to ride,,.  if hes not lame probably be ok when the skin is healed. If he is lame, I would for sure have checked locally which is always best anyway.

Lois asks me about Hoof Cracks…

Hi Dr.Dan , my horse has some awful cracks in his hooves and they are getting worse , they go up the hoof wall about half way, and I have him on biotin and using apple cider vinegar to get the bacteria out .

What else can i be doing ??
Lois

Hi Lois,

Best to work from the "inside-out" with hoof situations.

Personally, I don't like apple cider as it changes PH too much AND truth is that treating topical is not going to be an overall solution anyway though if prefferred,  our Grape Balm Hoof Healer products work well and is a start in the right direction. I'll also say that  biotin,  by itself, is s also useless. I would get this horse on our Hoof Check supplement asap and our Red Cal free-choice supplement.

Thanks For Asking! Keep me posted.

Abcess-frog?

My Gelding has an abcess-hole in the center of his frog.  We put over the counter Thrush medicine in it as advised by farrier.  We thought it was healed. He is very flat footed and the frog dried/pressed flat covering the hole.  He has gone 3 weeks plus and now by accident we dug across the frog (with pick) and reopened the flap/hole.   What is the best-most aggressive way to clear this up!

A big problem with most hoof products is that they contain formalin (formaldehyde embalming fluid), acetone or some other harsh chemical. These may help temporarily but in my opinion, over the long haul, just makes things worse. Consider our Grape Balm Hoof Healer as an alternative. It is ugly and stinks but a great topical for anything hoof wise.

Of course, we also want to help the body get rid of whatever it is trying to “discharge”. Our Health Check supplement would help from the inside out to do so.. (see page 36 of the magazine below). The Hoof Check supplement and Hoof Check Conditioner (topical) will help the hoof grow faster too.

My Horse…

Dear Dr. Dan,

I am writing for my boss, he has an Appaloosa whose main and tail is very tangled.  Could this be from an essential amino acid or mineral deficiency. We would gladly take any suggestions that you may have on this issue.  Thank you and we look forward to receiving your reply.
Robert K., DC

Great Question… Honestly in most horses it is typical to twist and tangle. BUT you are wise to consider vitamins and minerals for any coat/mane/tail/hoof “problem”. The single most beneficial supplement to consider would be Hoof Check supplement. The audio on “what to feed your horse” would be helpful for sure as would the article on salt and minerals— page 21 of our magazine.

Hoof Care?

My 14 year old Paint is having and has had a bad time with his hoofs.  He just doesn’t grow a hoof.  My farrier puts a piece of leather between his hoof & shoe for protection.  What would you suggest I try for him?
Thanks, Ruth

Good hooves start in the gut.

Please review our audio “What To Feed Your Horse” and also see the article on feeding (page 26 of the magazine). Links are located on our homepage as well as this site.

Also I would highly suggest our Hoof Check supplement and our RED CAL free choice- (all he can eat on the RED CAL). Follow directions on the Hoof Check. Topically our Hoof Check conditioner is great too.!
