Bridget asks about alfalfa/molasses and her QH with HYPP

We have a quarter horse with HYPP. We were told not to feed alfalfa or molasses. What products do you have that are free of those items?

thanks,
Bridget G.

None of our products have either.. those ingredients are an issue for sure, but actually many are doing great on our entire feeding program.  Go to www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com for more.

There are a couple of question/answers for HYPP within this site here:

Discussion with Pat about HYPP question and other concerns…

I met [you] Dr. Dan at the Harrisburg HorseWorld Expo in February.

On the way out of his lecture, I asked if he had any products for a Quarter Horse who has the genetic muscle diseases HYPP and PSSM. He mentioned two of his products, but I didn't write the names down and can't remember them. At the time, I checked the prices in your catalog and decided they were too expensive. However, the pills that have been very successful in preventing HYPP episodes in my horse have just increased in price (from $90 to $150 a month), which makes your products seem more affordable. Would you please email me the names of those two products? Thank you!

Pat O.

I believe wholeheartedly that our products are a tremendous value. Being pro-active with a quality regimen will save you money in the long run!  I suggest our whole feeding program (see: www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com ) ***Especially our Red Cal product.  There are many HYPP horses on this regimen.

Thanks for asking!

Thank you!  I want to use your Bug Check Field Formula but have to convince the other boarders whose horses are pastured 24/7 with mine.  Are you sure my HYPP/PSSM horse won't need medication (Acetazolamide) if he's eating your Bug Check Field Formula?

I of course initially suggested adhering to the entire feeding program not just Bug Check Field Formula.  If your horse is in with others I would suggest the regular/original Bug Check- not the field formula in this instance.

You just put the (regular/original) Bug Check directly onto the feed.. neither Bug Check nor any other feed or suppplement replaces medicine though.. please be clear on that… It is just that I personally don't use medicine nor ever suggest .

Our products are safe however with HYPP horses, as there is no added potassium. Don't expect them to prevent issues that medicine might…. totally two different aspects of hypp or health in general.

Also, if your horse(s) is/are getting the regular Bug Check onto the feed… the other horses don't have to be on it too for the needed results. Just fyi..

Again, Thanks for asking Pat

Jennifer asks about diet for rescued QH that’s HYPP postive…

Dr Dan…

I rescued a 16 year old Quarter horse about 3 months ago.  He is HYPP positve.

Currently he eats 6 cups of Blue Seal brand 'DEMAND', 4 cups of oats and a tsp. of white corn syrup -twice a days.  Plus hay and grass all day.

I want to get him off of the pelleted grain but am not sure what to give in place.

I am going to start giving him RedCal as soon as I get it.  And are 2 or 3 carrots a day ok?

Thank you, Jennifer

Great on the Red Cal! And OK on the carrots.

And Great on the Rescue!!!

Stop the corn oil!!

Please consider our Weight Check oil.

I would also suggest our "Just Add Oats" supplement, but start with just a pinch and work your way up.

We have never had an issue with HYPP horses using JAO (hundreds of such have used it) but always best to start slow, just in case..

Thanks for asking Jennifer!

Cindy’s question about Heaves and HYPP

Do you have a product for a horse with heaves and is also HYPP?

Supplement wise our Red cal is awesome for HYPP horses. The article on salt and minerals and the one called perfect pastures in the magazine (http://DrDanMag.com) mentions hypp with respect to minerals.

I would also suggest Aller Check and Joint Check (lungs are connective tissue as are joint etc) plus the Joint Check has all the ingredients of Health Check which really help reduce oxidative stress (anti-oxidant properties) which in my opinion is a big part of heaves.

All of these and even the Weight Check oil are great. This one will help somewhat with keeping weight on which is an issue in chronic heaves. Especially since they spend so much energy just breathing (when given in higher amounts – see the label where it suggest 4 to 8 oz per day for gain and 2 oz per day too just maintain or lose). We have really never had any issues with hypp horses even with any of these.

I would even suggest oats for feed along with our Just Add oats.

There is just not enough potassium there to effect but I always suggest that this specific supplement be added very gradually just to be on the safe side. Many have benefited and so much more beneficial than commercial feeds. See the website below on what to feed your horse below. It all applies to hypp horses too.
