Marianne asks about ulcer/colitis and our referral program…

Dr. Dan,

My Haflinger cross gelding Micah has ulcers (at least that is what the vet told me a few summers ago)  He has been looking poorly lately and now that the heat has set in he is colicky.  In Pain. Not eating and miserable.  What can I do? 1.  To get him out of pain? NaturallY? (NOW!) 2.  To help his system beat the ulcers? 3.  To keep him from getting the ulcers back? 4.  Why more in the summer?  Help!  Iknow you will recommend your feeding program.  I currently have him on Alfalfa hay, Bermuda grass hay and sweet feed 7 days per month with psyllium mixed in for prevention of sand colic(really bad here in the desert).

I have 7 horses and use them for a ministry I do for a prison program.  My budget is pretty slim to start adding costly additives.  I am a believer in your info about feeding oats.  I will start feeding them as well…but honestly..I can't afford all the additives. I can easily add the RED CAL…but feeding Just Add Oats and the Oil is costly for 7 horses Dr. Dan.  Any other suggestions?  Could I use it every other day?  Or something like that?  What is a natural pain relief for my little Micah guy?  I am so worried about him.  Such a neat little horse. Please Advise ASAP!  Today is June 22 2011.

Thanks for your help!! Have a blessed Day.
Marianne I.
P.S. interested in the earning potential of the program as well could it really work?

Hello Marianne.

Anything you can provide from the program would be a start.

At the very least the RED CAL should be provided free-choice.

On the What To Feed Your Horse site (link below) there is an article called,
"Perfect Pastures" that will give you insight to colic and the relationship
to changes in weather and grass/field conditions (where grown) etc.
Lots of variables.

While there do read the "Salt / Mineral" article as well.

You can also view other responses about colic here:

The complete feeding program is the basis for a regimen to go against
all the challenges our horses face… and this is no different than with ulcers.
While no guarantees, it has has many. Read the comment about ulcers at the
very bottom of this page:
http://askdrdan.com/?p=602

For pain… There is a homeopathic remedy called Arnica Montana (30 c) that can be
found at heath food stores etc.  I suggest the adult dose- 3 times a day. This may
provide the relief you are seeking for him.

When you are able— buying the at the qty discounts would be the most effective for you—
You could provide both Weight Check Oil and the Just Add Oats for less than 2.00 a day for each horse.

As far as our partner affiliate program— yes we have many that just share the good word about the products
that have worked for them and earn the monies to support the needs of their horses, pets and themselves.

I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers along with so many others facing challenges today.

Do keep me posted Marianne.

And thanks for asking.

Dr. Dan

answering Karen’s questions about her 10 year old mustang’s allergies…

Dr. Dan, I have a 10 year old Mustang who is allergic to the tiny bitting flies. He rubs out his mane, tail and looses fur on his face and chest. He was new to us last year in the early summer so we had no opportunity to do anything preventative for him. He was a mess and miserable. He is on Just Add Oats and Weight Check and he also gets free feed Red Cal and salt blocks. What else can we do? Bug sprays don't work and Spot On did nothing.

Any helpful information would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Karen W.

First get did of the salt blocks as they are counter productive to everything. Just be sure Red Cal is provided "free-choice" so they can eat all that they need when they need it..

I would also start on our Bug Check asap at 2 scoops daily. When you see results you can cut back some, but even if you have to give more it will only be healthy.  See how that does. You may need to add Health Check to help support detoxing all past "junk" in the system.  The Aller Check would also support the immune system. Do this and expect a new horse.

Also topically our "Finally Something That Works" spray will help the skin. It doesn't "kill" flys but helps keep off and helps the skin. Also on any skin lesions the Grape Balm ointment is helpful to say the least.

Thanks for asking Karen.

Elaine asks about Just Add Oats, allergies…

Hi, I am interested in ordering the equine product ‘Just Add Oats’.  I have a horse that has severe allergies to most things including soy, molasses and flax seed.  Every product  seems to have one or more of these ingredients.  Please advise if your product is clear of these.  Thank you, Elaine J.

Just Add Oats has NONE of either…… BUT truth is allergy tests always come back allergic to everything you can’t keep them away from.. personally I have found that the key is getting off all commercial feed, follow our feeding program, www.whattofeedyourhorse.com,  to the "T" which does include soy bean oil (totally different to soy and hundreds allergic to soy on it that do great) the Just Add Oats and our RED CAL.. I also suggest Health Check to help get rid of "junk" in the system already and Aller Check supplement to help get them through the initial issue (if they have hives, lung issues currently etc.) Thanks for asking Elaine!

P.S. Check out our allergy article in the magazine (www.DrDanMag.com), and our video and use www.askdrdan.com site and the search box/function for your issue (allergies etc.)

New “Live” Audio from Equine Affaire- “To Be Dewormed or Not To Be”

Here’s the audio recording from a live presentation I did
at the Equine Affaire in Pomona California, February, 2010.

It’s loaded with information about deworming, fecal exams and
so much more in regards to the health of today’s horses.

I might also add that there has been lots of "on target" information
released in other publications just in the past month.

This leads me to only add…

"Finally leading parasitoligists are calling for
fecal exams too instead of "just deworming",
something I’ve said for over a decade.

Nicky asked about parasite exam results…

Would you say that your natural dewormer is "strong" enough to deal w some of these rescue horse cases (like from the strongyle-positive horse sampled recently), where a huge parasite load is expected?

The last rescue horse I had was dewormed (at vet’s suggestion) w 5-day Panacur Power Pack (slow release), followed a month later by a large dose of Zimectrin Gold (deals w tapeworms, also).

At that point, three large blood-red large strongyle larvae dropped out of his butt, looking so healthy I thought they were alive (til I prodded them, and no response).

It took ALL THAT CHEMICAL WORMER to get those things out of him.  Is it your opinion or experience that continued doses of the natural wormer could do the same?

I used to use Diatemaceous Earth on all mine on a daily basis, but I think the large Strongyles ate holes in the rescue horse’s gut, because if I give him probiotics or DE or anything grainy, he explodes w diarrhea.  A lot of damage already.

No pressure to respond to this, I know you’re busy  and this is more of an ad-lib discussion.

Best regards, Nicky

Just understand that Chemical dewormers in my opinion are poison.

Just enough to kill the worms but not the horse.

They do negatively affect the immune system and certainly help develop these "resistant" strains… all that said we have had good results with all situations. The key is to keep rechecking at 3 week intervals to be sure. I agree that DE alone is useless, it helps but not enough. our worm check product is far from just DE though.

Ultimately this has to be your decision. We have thousands using but no clinical studies to back up anything. (wish we could but the expense is unbearable for something un patentable) so…..also see the site called www.wormcheck.com

Thanks for asking!
