Equine Herpes Cases Reported in MISSISSIPPI

May 10, 2012

The State Veterinarian’s Office was notified on May 9th of two confirmed cases of Equine Herpes Myelitis (EHV).  In addition, four other cases of suspected EHV-1 have also been reported. To date, three of these horses have died or been euthanized and three are ill with neurological disease.  All of the horses recently returned from the Bucksnort Trail Ride held April 23–30 in Humphreys County, Tennessee.  This event drew approximately 100 horses from multiple states.   The Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture have also reported cases in their state related to this same trail ride.

The ill horses in Mississippi have been isolated and are being treated by their attending veterinarian.   All Mississippi Bucksnort Trail Ride participants are being notified about the situation and the necessity for isolation and monitoring horses taken to the event.  The potential for exposure to other horses is also being evaluated.  At this time, there has been no spread to other horses in Mississippi.

Equine Herpes Virus is highly contagious among horses but poses no threat to humans. The symptoms in horses may include fever, nasal discharge, wobbly gait, hind-end weakness, dribbling of urine and diminished tail tone. The virus is easily spread by airborne transmission, horse-to-horse contact and by contact with nasal secretions on equipment, tack, feed and other surfaces. Caretakers can spread the virus to horses if their hands, clothing, shoes or vehicles are contaminated. The virus can cause aborted foals and can be fatal.

Horse owners should practice good biosecurity such as using their own trailer and equipment, not letting horses touch other people’s horses, disinfecting shoes and equipment, washing hands after helping others with their horses and limiting access to the farm. A downloadable brochure about horse biosecurity is available from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services at http://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/animal_health/content/printable_version/HorseBioSecurity_final.pdf.

EHV-1 and Neurological disease in horses are reportable conditions to the State Veterinarian’s office.

How the New Autoship Program works with the New TheNaturalVet.net

In continuing to share with you new features of the New TheNaturalVet.net, today we wanted to let you know that our new and more convenient Autoship program is now available!

Now while placing an order, you can create convenient "autoship" orders that not only can be scheduled every 30 days, but as many have asked for in the past— you can now setup orders that will be automatically ordered and shipped 60 days out from the initial order!

And yes, each order will continue to build Reward Points into your account for future free product.

The screenshot images below will help show the ease of this new system, but as always do not hesitate to call us so we can help create your order and future autoship orders.

Also note that if you had a previous autoship created in the old system, we will need to recreate your new order.  We have already started reaching out to those with those previously in the system, so please look for our call and if we miss you please do not hesitate to call the office at 877.873.8838 to help with this order or any other order.

Below is the screenshots we promised. I look forward to you being able to take advantage of this new system available to you as well as the other new features of TheNaturalVet.net

I appreciate your support and make it a great weekend!

In the example below we will start by selecting the single bag of RED CAL

Step 1 Ordering Red Cal

The next page gives the option to add this product to a desired autoship order placed in the future either 30 or 60 days out from the date of the initial order. The autoship is built product by product so as you will see later below in this example, it is possible to have different products shipped on a different schedule or to add a product that you may want today but not to be added to any autoship order at all– just for today's order.

Below shows the view as you select the timetable for your next autoship order

Now that you have selected the timetable, you can now choose the quantity and proceed to checkout and then add to the cart.

Below shows the view in the cart. If this is all you are ordering today then you would proceed to checkout, if you want to add more products choose to "continue shopping"

Below shows the view after we have continued shopping. As You will see we have added the Grape Balm Wound Healer for one time delivery today and not for future autoships. You will also see that we have scheduled the 60-day supply of Just Add Oats to be automatically ordered and shipped 60 days from the date of today's order.

At this point, if you are finished, you "proceed to checkout" to finalize this order.
Shipping charges for autoshipped orders will be  applied in accordance to the current scale and program in place on our website.

From Dave Ramsey's site:

Larry appeared on The Dave Ramsey Show just a month before his death in January 2007. Optimistic and cheerful as usual, he shared with Dave how his life evolved from a homeless twenty-something to a millionaire philanthropist.

He encouraged everyone to become Secret Santas in their own communities, to go out and do at least one random act of kindness during the holiday season.

Reprinted from:
http://www.daveramsey.com/article/remembering-secret-santa/

This Christmas will mark the third (now 5th) holiday season without Larry Stewart, the original “Secret Santa.”

For over 25 years, Stewart anonymously handed out $100 bills on the streets of Kansas City. During that time, he gave away more than $1.2 million to strangers in need.

The more he gave, the more stories of his generosity spread across the country. Larry even appeared in disguise on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1995. Secret Santa became famous, yet still anonymous. But he was more than just a Secret Santa during the Christmas season; he became a living example of Christ on earth.
Larry's Humble Beginnings

Larry Stewart grew up in a humble setting in Bruce, Mississippi. He never knew his dad, and his mother left at a young age. Raised by his grandparents, Larry learned an important lesson from his grandmother: “You don’t live well until you give well.”

That lesson hit home with Larry when he was homeless and struggling to make it after losing his first job out of college. One morning, without a penny to his name, Larry visited the Dixie Diner in Houston, Mississippi.

He ordered a big breakfast, knowing he did not have the money to pay for the food. After finishing, Larry pretended that he had lost his wallet. A cook approached Larry and said, “Son, you must have dropped this,” handing him a $20 bill.

Larry knew he hadn’t dropped the money, but he thanked the man and left. He bought enough gas to leave town and drove west, arriving in Kansas City with $18 to his name. Overwhelmingly grateful for the cook’s gift, Larry promised God that if God ever put him in a position to help others, he would do it.

Following Through On His Promise

Eight years later, Larry was starting to make a little money. Two weeks before Christmas on a cold evening, he stopped by a drive-in restaurant. A waitress, without a jacket, took his order. He handed her a $20 bill and told her to keep the change. The waitress’ face began to tremble and tears rolled down her cheeks. “Sir,” she said, “you have no idea what this means to me.”

That night, Larry remembered his promise to God years before. With $600 in the bank, he withdrew $200 and began driving around looking for people who needed help. He started handing out $5 and $10 bills all around town.

As Larry grew more and more successful in his business over the years, the $5 and $10 bills became $100 bills. For decades, Larry was known as “Secret Santa,” giving away thousands of dollars every Christmas—without ever revealing his identity.

In early 2006, Larry Stewart was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Doctors gave him little chance to make it more than few months. After a local newspaper told Larry they were going to reveal his identity as Secret Santa, he decided to come out and tell his own story.

Secret Santa was finally revealed.

Listen to the interview.

Without a doubt, Larry Stewart’s charitable spirit lives on. Through his incredible story of lifelong giving, and through the efforts of his Secret Santa Foundation, thousands of people are still impacted each year by his selflessness.

Take a lesson from the Secret Santa. Help out someone this Christmas. You don’t have to give a $100 bill to make a difference. Give your time, your abilities, and—if you have it—your money.

You don’t live well until you give well.

"The Stables At Midnight"
by Anne Flyzik Schaefer
Kneeling Horse
I have a true story to tell about midnight on Christmas.

It happened in 1991 or '92. My marriage had ended, and I was leasing a farm as a boarding stable. I had around 20 horses at Christmas that year.

My son was then 5 or 6 years old and knew the Thomas Hardy poem about all the animals kneeling down at midnight on Christmas Eve. He begged and begged to go to the stable at midnight, but I put him off, not wanting to disappoint him in this year of so many disappointments.

You see, I had a lot of horses that did not like to lie down even in the wee hours of the night, including two mares whose owners told me they'd had those two for years and had yet to even see them off their feet. A number of the others would lie down, but would immediately get up when someone entered the barn or came near them.

Well, that Christmas Eve, Conor woke up at 11:30 and begged to go to the stable to see if it was true. My heart was a little heavy as we went down.

It was 11:59. We entered the barn at midnight, flashlight in hand.

EVERY horse was kneeling. We walked down one side and back the other. Every horse was kneeling; none got up.

None were flat on their sides, not even the yearling. And the two mystery mares were also kneeling; so were the track lay-ups who always jumped to their feet when people approached: every single one of them.

It was so hushed and quiet and beautiful.

The faith of a child….

Conor is 13 now and stands 5'10. He still says to me, "Remember that Christmas Eve when we went down to the barn to see if the horses were kneeling?"

It's one of my most special lifetime memories.

Horse Playing In The Snow at RealHorseFarm.com- Click For More"Because Of Love"
by Linda Hagar

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses.

The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside.

The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One". She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?"

The old man looked down as his worn boot, scuffed at the barn floor, and his arm stole defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One". In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back.

He sank sobbing to the ground helpless before the fire’s fury. By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana.

Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them.

Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward.

There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift. Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, the "Old One" had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine.

And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift- Because of love. Only Because of love.

Below is an editorial cartoon that first ran in the
Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY) back in the early 60's on Christmas Eve.

It is by a famous cartoonist that worked at that paper, Hugh Haynie.
The Louisville, KY paper continues to publish it every year on Christmas Eve.

MEET THE MARWARI HORSE… I HAVE!

Marwari Photo By James ShambhuMEET THE MARWARI HORSE!

I first met some of this breed and a world renown owner, Francesca Kelly at the 2001 Equitana event and knew then I had blessed by the presence of not only some special horses (They ALL are of course!) but also a special person. I am proud to have been a friend of both ever since and have been honored by their continued support.

I shared some images on Facebook just a couple of days ago via a post from the Kentucky Horse Park and received several comments from people saying that by my posting of those pictures, it was the first time that they had seen or heard of the Marwari horse.

For that reason I felt that by sharing with the thousands that are connected to me via email that for many of you it might be your introduction to both the Marwari Horse and Francesca Kelly and her mission.

The Horse Park introduced an article that I hope you will read  (link below) by saying this…

The last known Marwari horses on view in North America will be living at the Kentucky Horse Park, thanks to Francesca Kelly, a woman who has dedicated much of her life to preserving this rare and exotic breed of horse from India. She has donated her last 3 mares and one yearling colt to the park. Click Here To Read More.

There is also a site that has just went online (link belowthat will continue to grow as a community while providing information about the Marwari as well as the documentary film project of Francesca Kelly, her friend Bonnie and others.

About The Movie Project:
Marwari, War Horse of the Mah?r?ja is the story of Bonnie and Francesca's journey to promulgate and promote the horse in India and abroad.  The Marwari horse has faced many challenges including near extinction.  In this story you will see two modern day heroes with outstanding passion and dedication do everything in their power to promote and raise awareness of the Marwari horse worldwide.  This film will move and inspire you to be the best you can be!

I hope you will connect to www.MarwariMovie.com today, to not only get a better glimpse into the Marwari horse, but to also show your support for this project. I also hope you found this interesting and will be something you will share with others!

Steve Jobs’ “Sugar Water” story…

Steve Jobs, a man with some answers and big ideas!

Some have compared him to Einstein, but his childhood friend and partner Steve Wozniak said that he thought Walt Disney or Thomas Edison was a better comparison for what Steve Jobs had contributed to our lives.

I wanted to share this story that always inspired me and I have shared with customers and affiliates alike through the years in hopes it would inspire others as it has me.

When Steve Jobs set out to make Apple Computer a household name throughout the world, he needed help running the company and marketing the computer.

He wanted a man named John Sculley who was at that time running Pepsi. Sculley was responsible for the "Pepsi Challenge" idea.

Jobs went to Sculley's office in New York City to try to lure him away from his position at Pepsi, a position he had held for 4 years.

Besides taking a chance with a company that was basically just moving out of a garage, Scully didn't like the idea of moving to Silicon Valley in California. And Jobs insisted that he would have to move.

Scully turned Steve Jobs and Apple Computers down.

(in the words of Paul Harvey) There's a "rest of the story"

This is what Scully said about what happened next…

And then he looked up at me and just stared at me with the stare that
only Steve Jobs has and he said- "do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life or do you want to come with me and change the world" and I just gulped because I knew I would wonder for the rest of my life what I would have missed.

Sculley went to work for Apple and the rest is history.

Sometimes I Don’t Have The Answers…

I'll let the picture, story and video below speak for themselves…

Navy Seal is honored by family and friends as his dog "Hawkeye" guards his master one last time…

Patricia asks about Just Add Oats product, microbials, probiotics?

Does "Just Add Oats" have microbials or probiotics in it?

Patricia R.

Hi Patricia, hope all is going well there!

Our "Just Add Oats" has some, but nothing like our Gut Check or Bug Check. In fact, it was about this time last year at the FEI World Games that we introduced our updated Bug Check ( BuyBugCheck.com ) with All Tech's probiotics. Just another reason why I recommend the BUG Check for year round use and not just when it's "buggy". Just so much goodness in it. and more so now than ever before!

Of course the Gut Check is a "targeted" formula that will for sure meet those needs.

Thanks for asking!

Bug Check from Dr. Dan Moore The Natural Horse Vet

Terry asks about natural feed for his horses…

Dr. Dan:  We totally agree with you that as we check our feed bag labels, we see corn hulls, etc that are not good for our horses.  We change feed when we see the labels change but your so right that we depend on brand names.  I want to switch my horses over to natural feed.  I have concerns.  I have one mare that is heavier w/cresty neck but has been in good health – about 9 yrs. old.  Another teenager mare in great body shape.  One big gelding about 17 hands that seems to need more than the others to keep his weight up and he's about 6 and a cribber which I'm trying to break that habit.  Recently I took in a teenager gelding from a client who needed him to have a new home.  I was not told that he had founder issues and his feet were horrible. He was used to grass & I don't have grass and even though I feed him alot of timothy & orchard grass hay w/some clover, he has lost weight in top line and butt area not to mention some rib area.  I am told he needs a carb diet.  I had his feet x-rayed and took out all the grown soles which were a mess and it was difficult getting his feet back to good health but with shoes & pads, he's doing better now.  But I want suggestions on what I should feed.  Also, for flies, I used Equitrol & Equimen supplements.  Some suggestions please.  I do not have pasture grass paddocks.

Hello Terry,

My Feed For Success program based on feeding oats and supplementing with 3 main products
( http://www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com ) is good for all horses. The Weight Check Oil that is part of the program is great for all weight issues wheter on or off and the "Hi Magnesium version of our free-choice fed RED CAL (no salt/mineral rocks/blocks) is something I think no horse should be without. The Hi-Magnesium version of RED CAL is more suited for cresty necks etc. We do have a Critical Care product for founder but I would at least start the other aspects before moving up to this. If you need to see other qurestion/answers about founder you can check here:
http://askdrdan.com/?s=founder (there are several pages to browse though using the 'Older Posts link at the bottom of each)

Equitol is a chemical and would never use. Our BUG CHECK ( BuyBugCheck.com )has been providing tremendous results for over a decade and almost a year ago it was at the All Tech world games that we introduced the new Bug Check with All Tech's probitoics…. making a product that was already more than just a "bug" product full of goodness like grape seed and more…. making it even more full of natural goodness and economical enough to provide all year long regardless of bugs/flies etc.

I hope this helps answer your questions and I appreciate you asking.

Please don't miss all the articles (Perfect Pastures" is a good one) and the other audios/videos to help even more.

Keep me posted and thanks again,

of greatness and legacies on the Fourth of July…

By the time you've read this you are probably soon leaving the house for celebrations tonight or have settled in after the day of celebration or maybe even after a day of work. Whichever it may be I do hope it will be and has been a safe and wonderful 4th of July holiday for you, your friends and family.

In thinking back to that day and time leading up to 07.04.1776, it's no secret that those great people were bound and determined to see our country through the course that they had set for themselves when they declared for our independence.. They were hungry for the outcome they desired and today we are all thankful for their hunger and determination and for their.

We owe a great deal to those founders as well as those that served in the fighting forces that help make it all a reality then and those that continue to serve in harm's way to help keep all that was fought for back then- just as real for us all today.

I know that you have many videos, audios, emails, tweets and facebook messages to come your way this weekend, but I''m thinking these are a couple you haven't seen. I wanted to share these two that I have selected for you that are well worth watching today and clinging to- well into the future.

The first is a audio/video depicting the true story of our National Anthem. It is quite a history listen that I'm sure than many haven't heard before.

Watch:

The second is the wonderful Les Brown who speaks about unleashing the greatness within you. When I hear this I am reminded of that desire that our founding fathers had to break free. They were not going to be denied.

I hope that when you watch this you will not only be reminded of their greatness but for the greatness that you have within you. I hope this message is something that you needed to hear today. I hope and want the best for all of us.

Watch:

Just like our founding fathers back then…

“If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace and your sleep for it…

if all that you dream and scheme is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it…

if you gladly sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror of the opposition for it…

if you simply go after that thing you want with all of your capacity, strength and sagacity,  faith, hope and confidence and stern pertinacity…

if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain,  can keep you away from the thing that you want…

if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, you will get it!”

—Les Brown

Thanks for letting me share this today.

for Mothers Day…

if you ask me…

Happy Mothers DayMother's Day is a time of course when we recognize that wonderful person in our lives that has meant so much to us for so long.

Most of us have someone in our lives to whom we have turned in times of crisis— friends and relatives upon whose shoulders we have cried and those who have shone a ray of hope upon us in desperate times. It's good to also recognize them at this time.

Mother’s Day is for anyone who has mothered someone and for anyone who has carried a child, whether that applies to biological mothers, adoptive mothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, care providers, childminders, mothers who’ve lost a child, single mothers, single dads, grandmothers, aunties, sisters or close friends.

Recognizing those you love and those who have loved you is not a difficult task. Sometimes the simplest of gestures can mean so much more than the most expensive gift; a few words of comfort, a hug and a listening ear for example.

For those who have lost mothers and children, although it may be painful, spend time remembering happy moments of the love and joy. Their love, lives on in you and is what gives you the strength to give love to others.

It will be a special time for us and I hope it will be for you as well-

 Happy Mother's Day!
