discussion with Kim. (she loves our products!)

Hi, I just starting using the RED CAL ,  Just Add Oats and Weight Check Oil feeding  program for our 2 horses and love it. However,  the question for this email is my friend is in Mexico (from US but there on extended visit) and her dog has worms. What can we recommend to expel them at this stage? FYI-she had him on Heartguard!!

Thanks in advance for your response on a product to recommend.

Kim B.

For sure nothing over the counter… it took me 3 years to find the right combination of ingredients for our product called Worm Check and was created for horses but people use it for their pet's health too.

Unfortunately I have tried to ship to Mexico in the past but with little success .. I would ask a veterinarian there as what types of worms it is— this is an important part of treatment and such may be specific to that geographical area.

Wish I could help more.

Thanks, I am not sure what type [of worms it is] but forwarded your email….

Also, just sent in our horse fecals for parasite testing [Worm Check Exam]… Will be ordering more products from your site!

My sister saw and spoke to you at Ohio Equine Affaire and we are fans!! I am in Massachusetts, she is in Evans City PA.
Thanks again, Kim

Thank You for your support Kim. I am glad I got to meet your sister.

Rebecca asks about her Yorkie with seizures

Dr. Dan,  Good evening!

My husband and I saw you at the Equine Affaire in Columbus, Ohio.  We purchased Bug Check for his mare and have been using it for a week.  We have already seen an improvement in her coat and are very pleased.

I am writing this evening because I have a Yorkshire Terrier who is four years old and he is having seizures.  I took him to my vet the first time, but by the time we got there it was over.  She believes that it was caused by low blood sugar.  We have cut out any table food except for eggs, oatmeal and some homemade vegetable soup.  He had a seizure in February.  We fed him an egg every day and he didn't have a seizure for six weeks.  He has had 3 since.  He seems not to have much of an appetite.  Even on days we feed him his egg, he eats very little of anything else.

I am wondering if you have a supplement that might help with this situation.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Rebecca

Seizures, holistically speaking, are a form of "discharge"— The body essentially is trying to get rid of something. i.e  vaccine, chemicals, drugs, hydrogenated fats etc. etc.

My suggestion to help support a "detox" and not put more "junk" back in.

Specifically I would suggest a natural diet pet food. I prefer one called Innova I also suggest our Health Check or Joint Check supplements "for pets" to support the liver in this process. Joint Check contains all Health Check does with the added joint support if this is a need. I also suggest our Human product/capsules called Redoxx. One capsule per 25 lbs daily onto the food.(break open the capsules). I have seen good results with this plan of action nutritionally- if anything would help nutritionally this plan of action as I have seen good results in the past. Then for the future avoid those things I mentioned above that need to be discharged in the first place.

Thanks for the report on Bug Check and your support. Hope to see you again next year.

Keep me posted and thanks for asking!

Rey asks about Bug Check for alpacas, camelids…

I would very much like to try Bug Check with our herd of alpacas. Have any of your clients used Bug Check with alpacas or other camelids? I see you have a recommended dose for sheep/goats, and I would guess that the dose for alpacas would be similar. Also, would any of the ingredients in Bug Check be considered toxic for camelids?

Thanks,

Rey

Bug check is totally safe and many use our Red Cal too..  of course Red Cal is best offered "free choice" …and for Bug Check give whatever it takes for control… 1/4 scoop up to a full scoop or more.. the whole bucket daily would only be healthy (it's much more than just a "bug" product). So economical and so full of goodness there's no reason to not provide all-year-round.

Thanks for asking!

what Jenny posted on my Facebook Wall (thanks Jenny!)

I am reminded of one of my favorite quotations— this from a Robert Frost poem:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

from Jenny…

Dr. Dan, I would like to thank you on behalf of my mom. One month ago, she purchased your products for her Jack Russel Terrier. He had allergies so bad that he was on allergy shots every 2 weeks, and steroids on top of that to help stop the itching. After much prodding from me, she ordered Health Check, Aller Check and Omega check and switched him to the Innova dog food (as suggested- and away from the Vet recommended food).

After just one month, he is completely itch free. Yes, I said COMPLETELY itch free. NO MORE SHOTS, NO MORE STEROIDS!!! Yes, amazing, but it's what i expected. All 6 of my horses are on your products. All healthy, happy, and loving life. Expensive? yes. Worth it? Absolutely.

Thanks again for coming over to the "dark side" ;-)

Natural Vet  (I said)

Thank you Jenny for sharing this. What a wonderful post to find waiting for me on my wall when I logged in this morning after a couple of weeks working away at the Equine Affaire and Midwest Horse Fair. I will be posting this to the blog as well. I appreciate the support and encouragement from you both. Thank You.

answereing Pat’s questions about her horses and dog…

I have moved and now have 4 horses ranging from 23 to 25 years old.

I am feeding them rolled/steamed oats which are processed at a mill in NC. Our soil here is VERY RICH IN IRON (years ago iron ore was mined here). I have supplemented with Triple Crown 30 for a couple of months. Before this, they were all on Vita Royal formulated by Lindsey McLean and I used her mineral mix. I can no longer afford this feed, so I have moved to the oats and need a supplement to add to them.

What would your recommendation be?

Now, a canine question. I have a part Aussie/Brittany mix who sometimes has a "quivering" in his limbs — sometimes after running and sometimes not having done anything. He has been on "the honest kitchen" diet which is "dehydrated" food with no additional supplements, except krill oil (human grade — 1000 mg/day). Western medicine has nothing to offer me, and he has not realized any benefit from acupuncture.

Thanks much!
Pat H.

Our supplement called Just Add Oats is ideal! It is also not high in iron either.

I would consider adding as well our Weight Check Oil and offering our Red Cal "free-choice" too.

www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com explains all the"whys". Thousands are on the program… Because of age, you might also consider our supplement called Joint Check (Horses) and our Joint Check "for pets" for your dog.

Thanks for asking Pat.  Looking forward to your positive comments after using the above… you will see the difference and they will feel the difference!

Kimmi, for their dogs, asks about PRA, kidneys, skin growth and thyroid

Hi Dr. Dan!

I'm wondering two things:  1. What do you recommend food and supplement-wise for dogs who have been diagnosed with PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) and have clouding of the eyes but appear to otherwise still be able to see pretty well in the daytime?  2. Do you believe there's a relationship between kidney and eye health?  3. What do you recommend for a dog with very low thyroid numbers in a blood screen?  He does not exhibit any typical symptoms (lethargy, weight gain, etc.)  4. Who, exactly, would you take your dog with a skin growth to?  I don't care where the doctor is, I will take our dog there.  I need a specialist referral please!!!

I would suggest a product that we have for people called Redoxx. It may help support both the retina and the thyroid. I would give 1 capsule per 25 lbs body weight daily. Divided or all at once is fine even or break the capsules open onto the food. I think all parts of the body effect each other. As for a specialist I wouldn't. Holistically speaking when you have growths on the skin that you biopsy or remove generally leads o more issues anyway. The reason is that homeopaths and most holistic vets would feel that as the body is trying to "get rid of" something through the skin (the bodies largest organ often forgotten), removing such only confuses the body more and leads to deeper more serious issues.

Personally I would try to assist the body as opposed to confuse. I would suggest our Joint Check supplement for pets as a super potent antioxidant formula as well as the "joint aspect" ingredients may help the skin overall too as such tissue is all integument type any way. Our Aller Check for immune support is highly suggested too.  I would also suggest our Omega Coat Check Oil supplement for the fatty acids etc.

So…. that's my opinions ..hope they help your pet as they have many.  Of course having the pet checked locally regardless of if u follow conventional type treatment would always be best. Once abnormal growth has started anything can happen. It is just impossible to say much else without seeing, touching feeling etc.

Again, thanks for asking Kimmi!

Dear Dr. Dan,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful (and quick) response!

We are wondering if you're still a practicing veterinarian and if you are taking new clients.

Thank you!

Scott & Kimmi

Actually I practice everyday doing my best to help folks like yourself. As for an "actual" hospital, I sold them both back in 1991 and have gone down this more natural path ever since. Thanks so much for asking! :-)

Answering Lois and her question about feline hyperthyroidism…

Hii – I use your equine products and LOVE them!

I was wondering if you had anything to help support my two cats who both are iin the beginning stages of hyperthyroidism. My younger cat is not showing any clinical signs yet other than the enlarged nodule, but my 16 yr old is starting to lose weight and I don't want to put her on pharmaceuticals  – can you help?
— Lois B.

PS – met you at the Equine Affaire in Springfield  - absolutely great products!!

Thanks so much for asking!

My personal feeling on hyperthyroidism in cats is that it is environmental. Used to be (way back when I was in Vet School) that it was just a problem with cats in the big cities. Specifically NY, LA and Boston. Of course now it is everywhere. With this in mind, I would focus to support detoxing of the liver and the body in general. In other words help get rid of the "junk" and not put more back in.

"Product wise", I would suggest our REDOXX (a people product) at 1 capsule daily (break open onto the feed) for an average size cat. I would start with 2 capsules daily for the first 2 weeks. I would also consider our pet products… Omega Coat Check oil for the rich source of fatty acids and our Health Check supplement for pets also.

Finally, I would be very careful about food, future vaccinations, medicines etc. The food I prefer for pets presently is INNOVA.
Specifically for the problem I don't have the answer but generally speaking the above may help if anything will nutritionally. I have had several to benefit over the past decade.  Again thanks for asking and for the kind words about our equine products!

Eileneen’s update on jack russell terrier with allergies and arthritis pain and her horse…

Dr. Dan,

I wanted to update you on my jack russell terrier with allergies and arthritis pain.  He is doing so much better!  His skin is clearing up with some continuing (but shrinking) skin lesions that I am continuing to treat with Marigold product.  The Comfort Caps have helped tremendously!  While he has some stiffness when first getting up sometimes, he seems much more comfortable than during previous winters when he was on various pain meds.

Also, my horse with Cushings and a history of liquid stool discharge during the winter is doing much better.  He has been on your feeding program for quite some some, and recently you had suggested Gut Check and Aller Check to help with the liquid stool.  It has been nearly a week since he has had NO liquid stool and his stool is improving in consistency as well.  He used to just have stool leaking nearly all the time throughout the winter, and his back legs are now dry!  It was so bad that I used to have to lend my farrier an old jacket of mine when she trimmed him because he would be so wet down his back legs and tail!

Thanks Again!!!

Eileen

———————————————————————-

Previously….

Hi Dr. Dan,  I have a 23 year old TWH gelding who has Cushings, and also develops diarrhea beginning in fall and through the winter for the past couple of years. It presents as liquid stool that accompanies gas, though his stool is also frequently not well formed.  He remains wet all down his back legs.  Last year it was better as my vet suggested starting in the fall with Succeed and Fasttrack which are digestive enzymes.  With us heading into fall, would you recommend I forgo this procedure and instead use your Gut Check (and possible Critical Care)?  He is now on your feed program-oats, weight check oil, just add oats, and red cal hi-mag.

Thanks, Eileen

Definitely add the Gut Check. If he has a cresty neck then the Critical Care supplement. Be sure he has access to Red Cal "free-choice" all the time too. Unless he has the cresty neck, I would just use the regular version of Red Cal instead of the Hi-Mag version.

Thanks for asking Eileen

Genis asks about ostertagiosis parasites in dogs?

Have you ever heard of ostertagiosis parasites in dogs?

I feed my dogs a raw diet and today had their fecal checked and found this cow parasite eggs.

Guess they got it from eating raw beef? Maybe I should be cooking the meat?

Genie

I doubt if it came from the raw meat. Unless I am mistaken (as parasitology was decades ago) it would come from the fecal material (ie. manure) of the cattle or contaminated grass. I think the larval stage has to develop in the manure and grass before it can be infective. I would really like to know how they identify this species anyway as it looks almost like typical hook worms and strongyles in horses. Probably would take a real "expert" to differentiate. (just a thought). I don't think eggs would even develop in a dog. I suspect it is more species specific than that. What I mean is that eggs just shouldn't be in dogs UNLESS it just passed through the digestive tract???The eggs come AFTER development in the host species (cattle)

Good food for thought and for researching more into this. I did try to find what the eggs or larvae looked like in a smear but couldn't find anything. I did view the samples so hopefully will have some recall if I could find photos of what they look like. The suggestion was to deworm with panacur – but would rather have a more definitive diagnosis (rather than "it looks like what I see in cattle and sheep"), before putting drugs into their system

Genie

I would just start with a google image search of the name. I suspect you will find the images. Many use our Worm Check (our natural horse paste) for their dogs …about 1 inch per 50 lbs. Can't say for sure it will take care of this but is what I would do.

Thanks for asking!

Monica asks about our Weight Check Oil (soybean oil, gmo-free)

Hi Dr. Dan.

Please forgive me for carrying on about this "soy" issue, however, in doing more research, there seems to be SO much controversy on this subject (I happen to use the Weight Check, recommend it to all of my clients with pets and love the results.)

I do realize that there are nutritional differences between humans and animals, however, I do have several more questions in hope for me to become clearer on this subject and to help me explain it more clearly to my clients . . .

1. One article stated that soy products come in fermented and unfermented.  Fermented is the more beneficial, where unfermented is where the health problems arise, i.e. thyroid disorder (cushings??,) kidney stones, allergies, digestion intolerance's to name a few (this happens to be written by Dr. Mercola).

2. How is soybean oil produced and does it fall into either of these categories?

3. What is the difference from the Weight Check for equines verses the Omega Oil for dogs and cats?  Since I buy the larger quanty of W.C., is it ok to give to my dogs and cats?

4. On a human level, and as a 51 year old, I consume some soy products, i.e. soymilk, tempeh, am I at risk with the claimed health issues?

Ugh! this is very confusing to me, so thanks for your patience in clearing up this dilemma.

Monica

No problem:

First.. Thjs is NOT SOY  This IS soybean oil in our Weight Check Oil… fermentation has nothing to do with the oil.  When articles refer to soy they are referring to "PROTEIN" or milk type products from soybeans.. WEIGHT CHECK is fatty acids..not protein related. Our oil is crude, unrefined meaning that the only processing is squeezing the oil out of the bean… cold pressed, no chemicals whatsoever, no hydrogenation, no trans fats etc. etc.. As for thyroid issues ..I use it (always) as part of the  treatment for thyroid issues allergies etc.
 Weight Check Oil
It is OK to give the Weight Check Oil to pets.

I don't use soy milk mostly because I don't like it. We use organic cows and goats milk. Almost all soybeans, in fact, are genetically modified today which is another big reason I don't use soy milk. Of course, as I've mentioned before,  it took me three years to find the source of our soybeans for our Weight Check Oil which are FREE of genetic modification. I even have someone going to the fields to verify the seeds when planted.

Thanks as always for asking and hope this helps.
Thanks for your support!

Dr Dan
