Sheryl asks a deworming question…

Thank you for your impressive prompt response to our Equine Sarcoids email.  Appreciate your opinion, will ponder your advice.

One other quick question, same horse 14 yr gelding, NSH recent full fecal egg count was 625.  Really do not want to use a chemical wormer, have used Dynamite Herbal Tonic, too much powder, Jake (horse) would not eat it, got him to eat it, did not reduce his worm count.

With this current egg count would you try your natural wormer (LOVE that it is in liquid form!!!) or use chemical and then try to maintain on your wormer?  Used Ivermectin in April.  UGH, this is agonizing.  He does experience some stress colic when the season changes summer to fall, don't want his immune system compromised heading into fall.

Thank you for your help.

 REALLY appreciate it.

Sheryl D.

For sure read the article on salt and minerals as I would be real surprised if our RED CAL didn't  help prevent the colic issues in the future. I would suggest our Worm check paste (go to www.wormcheck.com for info on worming in general). After using I would recheck in 3 weeks the fecal. If by chance is still positive give 3 days in a row. If then still positive 3 weeks late I would really suggest focusing on supporting the immune system with our Health Check supplement. I really suggest the Red Cal free-choice asap. The colic you mention is a "tell tale" sign. See the article "Mineral Wise, Salt Poor" linked to from the What To Feed Your Horse website as well as our Magalog also the multiple audios and videos in the library section and linked to throughout the website. A Tip to Jean with a horse that blows and plays with the RED CAL…

If I  leave the red cal out for free feeding,  I have one horse who plays in it and wastes it.   He blows it and it comes out of the bucket and scatters.     Is there a way I can add it to their daily feeding?   I have tried putting a couple of ounces at the sides of their individual feed tubs at night ( in their stalls) and it is gone the next morning.

Red-Cal (25lb.)

Thanks

Jean

Only put an inch or so of RED CAL  in the bucket. Wet it or let it rain on it (tip the water off the top after the rain). With only an inch or so and wet they can blow it out and it actually sticks to the bucket when tipped too. It is fine to put on the feed (a tablespoon or so a day) but the real preventive health is still having available free-choice. See the article on page 20 in the magazine (link below) and also at What To Feed Your Horse link below.

Carlita’s question about horse with cushings, possible insulin resistant and more…

I have a cushings horse that we think is also insulin resistant, he has foundered in the past and has laminitis off and on. I started using a barefoot trimmer and your products a couple months ago.  I just recived the just add oats, weight check and health check, and I have the red-cal. I just wanted to know if it was ok to feed all these at the same time. I noticed some had the same ingredients as others.

Why do I need to feed the Red Cal and the just add oats?

Thank you,  Carlita

Thanks for asking. All are designed to work together. Totally different concentrations for totally different reasons. Our Just Add Oats is what man knows they need. Our Red Cal product, simply-put, replaces salt and mineral blocks (see the article on salt and minerals in the magazine why these are killing our horses and a big part of the cause for laminitis to begin with) red cal really does more by probably providing micronutrients not yet discovered by man. There is an article on laminitis as well in the magazine and in the library section audios as well. Also see the article called Perfect Pastures.

Kathy asks about treating rain rot…

I was told once that when treating rain rot bleach and listerine mixed together but I don't remember the dilution of that. I am waiting for the owner of the horse to send money to pick up fungus shampoo for the horse but do you have something natural that you can recommend that I might have laying around the house to use?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I would never suggest any "fungus" shampoo or ointment or any chemical at all. Fungus is not the issue. If it were, as contagious as fungus is, ALL horses would have.

The key is the immune system and I have found that the body is trying to actually "discharge" "junk" for lack of a better descriptive term. Junk is from commercial feed, dewormers, vaccines and all the other toxins and synthetics we expose our horses too so…

All that being said they key to successful long term treatment is to help the body get rid of this "junk", not put more back in and support the immune system. We do that with the feeding program at http://www.whattofeedyourhorse.com/. Follow it to the "T" for long term health. Deworm (do fecals instead… See http://www.wormcheck.com/), vaccinate etc as little as you feel comfortable with so as to not put more back in. Help the body get rid of the "junk" with our supplement called health Check and support the immune system with joint Check. You will have a new horse. Topically you can use our grape balm herb wound healer will not interfere with the body trying to get rid of the junk as would other topicals.

Thanks for asking!

Marilyn asks about her horse with “scratches”…

Dr. Dan

Apparently my horse has a case of scratches.  I just found it last night.  I see on the net there are so many thoughts on it.  He wasn't in mud and isn't in mud, so I can't figure out why this happened, too much moisture in the grass he was standing on perhaps??  What and how to treat?  I am also looking in your archives to see if I can find something.  I don't want it to spread.

Thanks. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Scratches has little to do with mud. In my opinion it is the body attempting to discharge something through the skin, the bodies largest organ. Forget the fungus issue. If it were fungus only all horses exposed would have it. The key is to help the body get rid of such junk, not put more back in and support the immune system. To help get rid of such I suggest the Health check supplement. The biggest source of such "junk" is commercial feed with hydrogenated fats etc. I suggest following our feeding program at www.whattofeedyourhorse.com to the "T". No commercial feed at all. To support the immune system I suggest the Aller Check supplement (somewhat pricey but awesome). Of course vaccinate, deworm etc with chemicals and other sources to toxins as little as you feel comfortable with. We do fecals.  Topically I would only use our Grape balm herbal would healer. It is ugly and stinks but works great. Fungal products, bleach etc only make worse. Scratches are not easy and can be a pain but the above has helped hundreds if bot thousands. Thanks for asking!

answered Karen, who asked about heaves

I have a boarder whose owner travels a lot and her horse has heaves.  He is currently on prednisone and an herbal for heaves, but he is usually in some level of distress.  He lives out, but due to lack of grass from the heat, he gets hay along with the rest of the herd.  It is good clean hay.  What to you suggest?

Thanks

Karen J.

Heaves is one of the worst forms of allergies as I am sure you know. All such actually start in the gut. Hundreds of horses now if not thousands have been greatly helped and most all extremely helped by getting them off all commercial feed and onto our feeding program at www.whattofeedyourhorse.com all commercial feed that I have found is full of hydrogenated fats etc etc. These are killing us and our horses. Of course vaccines, chemical dewormers etc should be reduced to as little as the owners feels comfortable with  to also decrease other "junk" into the system. (We don't give any)

To support the immune system further I always suggest our Aller Check supplement and our to help get rid of the "junk" already in the system our Health Check. Expect at the least a much improved horse. The hay is not really the issue.  It just helps "trigger". There are multiple audios on the website library section and an article on allergies in the magazine and even a video on allergies in the library section of our site.

Thanks for asking!

“Conversation” with Lisa about what to feed her horses…

Dr. Dan,

What is the exact micro and macro content of (your) Red Cal, do i need to add Copper. My horse has severe arthritis in his hock and from what im reading this could have been triggered by a mineral deficency? I thought one of these was believed to be copper. Is there any hope his conditon could be improved by this supplement?

Even if it were, which is SO….unlikely There is a lot of misinformation out there on copper. I would suggest actually our entire feeding program including the Red Cal. That program is at www.whattofeedyourhorse.com. The ingredients are on the label and can be seen when you click on the product online or you could call the office and they can fax you a label. The sources are natural sea beds from ancient oceans. Truth is there are probably micronutrients we haven't yet discovered too. Simply put Just Add oats supplement is what MAN knows they need (plus the fatty acids in Weight Check) and Red Cal ( Red Cal being free choice especially too) "picks up the pieces".

I would suggest for your horse our Joint check supplement as well. There is nothing like it either and along with the feeding program (and by itself) has helped thousands and thousands. Thanks For Asking!

Do i still need to supplement selenium?

Absolutely not. Red Cal has a very very safe organic selenium too.

What about the clacium: phosphorous ratio, does it balance out the hat im feeding( grass with some alfala).

The Just Add Oats is balanced per what "man knows". Regardless of what the get alfalfa or grass hay or simply grass they fill in what they need with the free choice Red Cal. We have tens of thousands on it and have our own research herd of 200 plus (all ages, mares stallions etc) so rest assured they will excel and get what they need.

Could i contiune feeding the current feed im on and use red cal and just add oats without the oats. Im feeding triple crown lite and legends perforamance, both are already fortified feed?

I would switch to oats asap. Commercial feeds are full of hydrogenated fats. These are killing us and our horses in my opinion. The industry has yet to admit it as an issue since they have alternative that is stable enough to ship across country in hot trucks and feed rooms. Red cal and weight check is fine with anything and I would give half on Just ad oats. Please do see the www.whattofeedyourhorse.com website and or page 4 and 5 of the magazine.

Thanks Again For Asking!

Sherry asked about lesions on 2 horses (mother/daughter)

Dr. Dan:  I have 2 gray horses, mother & daughter, that have a few raised black lesions on the skin.  Mostly, they are around the head and ear area.  My vet said they were mylenoma?  I am not sure of the word.  I asked him what we should do. He said they do not mean the same on horses as they do on humans.  He was not concerned.  They do not appear on my other horses.  Would you be able to explain what these are and what they will do?  The horses are not bothered by them.  But I am.

Sherry

They are a tumor or a form of cancer. They are very common in horses especially grey. They mayor may not cause issues. I would consider putting our Grape Balm herbal wound healer on them. If anything topical will help it will. Wish I could tell you more, but sometimes its and issue others not. The grape balm is worth the try for sure.

Thanks for asking!

I answer Carlita’s question about Cushings…

I have a 10 year old horse with Cushings (on Pergolide), with laminitis and white line disease.

He had a systemic fungal infection a couple years ago, we had to treat it orally and it finally cured his hairless leg after a few months of trying everything. I just started the red cal high mag, health check and gut check. He gets hay and some almonds (no grain at all). He is off the grass since he gets grass founder. I wanted to know if you had any thoughts on systemic yeast/fungal infections.

I heard they can affect joints and wreak havoc on the whole body. He has been itchy all over but the health check and gut check seem to be helping. I know probiotics can treat yeast/fungal infections which isnt that basically what white line disease is? I want to get back to the basics and make sure he is getting the nutrition his body needs to heal and then work on whatever else he may need from there.

Do you have any thoughts? Is it ok to use health check and gut check together at the same time?

All of our products are designed to work together so no problem with health, gut or any of them. The "leg fungus"  (possibly scratches)  and white line are pretty much the same issue. In each case the body is trying to "discharge something". The fungus is not the issue.  The key to treat them is to help the body with this "discharge". The health check is the correct supplement. Of course you don't want to put any more back in either. (Commercial feed, vaccinations, dewormers etc are potential sources).  I would suggest Just Add Oats supplement with a handful of oats to mix it with. I have thousands of laminitic and cushings horses on oats  by the way with only positive benefits. I would also add the Weight Check oil supplement  (cell membranes transport nutrients into the cells and "junk" out AND these membranes are almost all fat…Weight Check is good fat not hydrogenated fat. Also see www.whattofeedyourhorse.com. This is the program I would suggest especially considering the cushings and laminitis too. I would follow it to the "T" and eventually as time goes on wean OFF the pergolide as I have been able to do with hundreds.

One more thing…many think that cushings is related to vaccines. I do as well. I also feel hydrogenated fats as in almost all commercial feed, is killing our horses and a potential cause.

Thanks for asking Carlita!

Rhoda asks about help for her rescued 7 year-old Thoroughbred

Hi Dr. Dan,

I am at a loss as to what to do for my 7 year-old Thoroughbred.  I've had him less than a year.  He was a rescue, was nearly starved a little over a year ago, but now is doing well.  I've had him for 9 mos. and accordingy to our vet is allergic to flies.  He eats alphalpha and tri-mix supplemented w/ omelene and oat bran.  I have tried everything on the market to help decrease his suffering from chronic itching and biting.  I was inspired when I found you on the web.

Can you make this easy for me, and recommend what products you carry that you would recommend to help provide him comfort.  Like all of us, we have been hit hard by the economy and would like to try to keep this within a manageable budget.  I really liked what you had to say but don't have a clue where to start.  I really hope I hear back from you and can provide relief to my beloved horse.

Rhoda R.

Hi Rhoda,

Hope the best for you all here… follow the feeding program at www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com to the "t"… no commercial feed or other supplements…. just oats (gradually switch to same amount of grain now feeding). to these oats add Just Add Oats supplement and weight check oil supplement. Also make Red Cal available free choice at all times. Add Aller check for immune support and Health Check to help get rid of all the junk already in the system. I expect you will have a new horse soon. This has helped for so many I would be surprised if not for yours too. there are articles on the web and in the magazine, there is an video and audio in the library section. and feel free to search www.askdrdan.com for allergies.

Thanks for asking!
