Question about iron

Is there a limit to iron a horse should get?
In the Just add oats there is 7200 ppm.

The key is the source of the iron.

A lot of minerals including iron are other industries left overs. And as you know certain kinds of these can tie up other minerals as well as just allow the ability for more internal “rusting” or oxidation. (Another reason I suggest our antioxidants Health and Joint Check)

There are some supplements that are often prescribed even by veterinarians that have way to much iron in my opinion. Many are used for anemia conditions though most anemic conditions in horses in my opinion, generally speaking, are not even caused by iron deficiency.

I am very careful of such and you will find our products “sourced” good, adequate but Not excessive.  Thanks for asking

4 year old “morgan” loosing his mane…

Dr.Dan, my recently gelded 4 year old morgan is losing his mane, shedding the long strands, strangely not his tail.

I was told this could be from gelding at a later age, or a dietary deficiency???

Not from gelding.

Most likely protein.

Need better hay, grass or something most likely. Check out our feeding program (http://www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com) In the magazine is an article as well on what to feed your horse.

In addition to the program, for now to arrest the problem I would also suggest our Hoof Check supplement.  It will help hasten recovery because of some unique amino acids and other ingredients within it.

Thanks for asking!

Arabian horse with sweet itch…

Help!!!

My horse has sweet itch. Will Bug Check help?

Will I get the most help for my horse if I follow the recommended dosage on the bottle or would more be better?

My horse is a 9 year old Arabian— 1000 lbs.

Thank you,
Veronica

I see hundreds and it is awful isn’t it… but there is great hope but it is not simple.

It takes a change of feed and supplements etc.

First, he does need Bug Check supplement as you note. I would give at least 2 scoops daily. He also needs our Health Check to help get rid of whatever “junk” is in the system and related (see attached article on allergies). Also add our Aller Check supplement. 2 scoops daily.

Sweet itch is so much more than just bug reactions… they are what triggers, but the immune system is really hyper sensitized and needs support.

Throw away your salt and mineral blocks and give our RED CAL instead.. all he can eat all the time.. replace whatever you are feeding currently (regardless of what it is) with the same volume of oats. Commercial feed is often part of the source of the allergens.

To make the oats complete, to those oats add our Just Add Oats supplement (follow directions) and our Weight Check OR H2oil (the higher grade Weight Check does seem to be giving better results over all than the H2Oil).

What To Feed Your Horse?
http://www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com will help explain. There is an even an audio to listen to.

In the magazine attached there are also articles on what to feed, fats, allergies etc. etc and the library section of our website even has lectures I have given on allergies.

Also, on the wounds and itchy areas (if any) put our Grape Balm herbal wound healer.. it is ugly and stinks but awesome!

You will have a new horse soon.. at least hundreds and hundreds have. In fact I don’t know of any that have not tremendously been helped.

Thanks for asking!

Please pray for Rusty’s return…

Hi All,

Some of you may be aware that we lost our little friend Rusty this past week.

We had stopped in over night at a friends house and they let him out when we weren’t there and he ran from them.

We have been searching for days without a sign. We have put flyers up, handed them out, ran an ad, contacted a search & rescue group, praying constantly, and have been in constant contact with a pet psychic.

This was Trevor’s little Dachshund, Rusty.

We are devastated that he is still gone.

I am a firm believer in the power of prayer. While trying to leave no stone unturned, I ask you to please pray for a happy ending for this little dog, as well as the kids.

Thanks.
Much Love,
Anna

Will do Anna, and will ask others to do the same- keep us posted!

B.C says, “Cribbing horse… not anymore”!!!

Dr. Dan and co.

Just wanted to let you know that after switching my horse to whole oats, (your) Just Add Oats and (your) H2oil, he has stopped cribbing.

I saw Dr. Dan at the Harrisburg Horse expo at the end of Feb and changed my horses food shortly thereafter. He used to be on Alum and a sweet feed mix which caused instantaneous and heavy cribbing on his stall door. He is a wind sucker type of cribber, not one that chews on stuff, he just holds on and sucks air in.

I noticed a substantial improvement right away and now after eating his evening rations of the above mentioned mixture he just hangs his head out the door like any normal horse would. I really, really can’t believe it, I am so happy for him since it was such a strong and obsessive compulsion.

I’ve had this horse for 12 years and he has always cribbed, badly when in his stall, and also when out to pasture on anything he could get a hold of. The only way to stop him was with the miracle collar and that contraption is just too much like a torture apparatus for me to use it for too long.

I have been so wowed by this development that I sent a letter out to our local trail organization, the Amwell Valley Trail Association telling their members about it and hoping someone else will give it a try and let me know what their results are.

So, thanks for this most unexpected but much appreciated result of switching my horses to the Dr. Dan way.

Dr. Dan with another “feel good” post…

Yep, all day long I am blessed to try and help people with health issues for themselves, their horses and their pets.

And at time I like to share a simple “feel good” story when I post. I hope you enjoy it like I did…

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room’s only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back..

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.

Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band – he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.
He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Dr. Dan, I have a question about oats…

We were feeding our horses whole oats but they wasted a lot of the feed and acted like they could not chew them.

Their teeth are maintained by an equine dentist.

Our 30 year-old could not eat them at all even soaked, so we switched to the crimped oats, we use them up fast but I am concerned as we live in south Texas where it is normally humid (currently in a horrible drought).

We will add DE to the oats as that keeps bugs out and does help with excess moisture.  Are we doing a disservice to our guys?

—- Debra

Not at all.

They simply need our Just add Oats supplement added.

Oats alone are not enough and out of the tens of thousands of horses on oats. I have Never seen one that couldn’t digest or chew (some did need soaking).

But regardless they do need Just Add oats since oats are not complete alone. This also has enzymes etc.

The Weight Check oil also gets the fats right.  I would suggest our Red Cal free choice too.

DE in not very palatable so that may be part of the reason for them not eating the whole oats good BUT do remember that oats must be supplemented to be complete. (Way better than commercial junk too regardless if crimped or whole).

Be sure to review info at http://www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com

Respiratory infection…

My horse has had sinus infection.

The vet came and said the lungs sounded fine.  She had snot that was yellow coming out of her nose.  It came and went 3 times.

I thought she was fighting it on her own.  She only had a fever the first week.  We got penicillin for her and gave her a 35 ml shot and then a 25. My husband said that was enough.

I didn’t think it was because at this point she was constantly opening her mouth.  Sinus?  It has been 4 days since she had the penicillin and she starting the mouth jaw manipulation and appears to be coughing again. Is there a natural remedy I can give her?

—Melanie

Not really because of the antibiotic meds given so far.

But for future reference if u r going to use u must stay the course of suggested time for use otherwise it could make worse. I suspect whatever is going on will have to run its course now.

I also suspect Strangles may be a possibility. I would consider having re checked.

To really support the immune system I would also suggest our Aller Check supplement.

Hang in there. Strangles can get ugly. BuT it may be just a simple infection too.

Dr. Dan; I have a DSLD/ESPA horse…

Hello Dr. Dan,

I have a DSLD/ESPA horse, and I was wondering if you knew of any supplements that could help him.

I suspect that the cause will be ruled out as hereditary as time goes on.

The most likely cause in my humble opinion would be two-fold…

mineral and fat related. processed fats (hydrogenated as in todays commercial feeds) which make up the majority of nerves that “fired” tendons muscles etc. etc. and mineral imbalances and excesses (even heavy metals from vaccines may be involved)   With all that being said I would first suggest our feeding program (oats along with Just Add Oats and our NON hydrogenated Weight Check oil and Red Cal, hi mag in this version).

I would increase the Weight Check oil to twice the normal amount suggested on the label. this may help displace the bad fats present. I would also double the Just Add Oats at least for several months to load the body with the extra vitamins, minerals.

Finally I would add the Health Check to help provide herbal support that are not available elsewhere.   Take pictures before and after so we can see the improvement in the ligaments etc.

Dr Dan; will the grape balm help this skin condition…

I have a horse with what I believe to be scratches.

The area just above the hoof is pretty cruddy/scabbed/cracked.

I purchased the Grape Balm Hoof Healer.  Can I just smear that up higher onto the leg, or do I need to purchase the Grape Balm Herbal Wound Healer for that?

The literature does not tell me if they are the same formula.  We have been battling this stuff for 2 years now and it is just not getting any better.  What do you suggest?????

Not the same but fine to use there too.

Listen to the 20 Audio in the library section on our web site dealing with skin care/hoof care.

You can treat topically but the real key is getting them off commercial feed (a source of “junk”) and boosting the immune system.

I suggest feeding oats along with Just Add Oats and Weight Check oil. I also suggest Red Cal free choice. (Listen to the audio on what to feed your horse).

I also suggest the Health Check to help get rid of the “junk” and Aller check to really support the immune system.

Thanks For Asking!

Dr. Dan; about our easy-keeper mare…

We just purchased an eight year old mare for my daughter. The horse was definitely overweight (especially over the ribs and shoulders)when we got her.

She is loosing weight now on a diet of hay only with one supplement for her feet which were cracked.

She is eating free-choice Remond salt(loose)at the moment but I want to purchase a good mineral/salt(loose)supplement for her as I believe completely in free-choice mineral feeding for all my animals.

Should I go the Mag route with her?

She seems to be dropping the weight easily but I am finding her muscle-tone underneath isn’t what I would expect as she appears to be heavily muscled and is now showing some flabbiness to that musculature.

She is also very “alert” and high-headed but can be settled down with quiet grooming and light exercise.  She doesn’t spook or misbehave in any other respect…just seems to want to see everything.

Thanks.  Karen

I would get the “hi mag” version of Red Cal.

It can often help settle a nervous horse as well and is good for any horse anyway…

Also listen to the audio on “what to feed your horse”.

To burn fat you need fat (good fat) like our Weight Check oil.

Typically 2 oz per day will maintain or help lose if needed. More than 2 oz will typically put fat on. Endurance and high performance horses can even get up to 8 oz daily if needed.

Thanks for asking!

Dr. Dan… my horse with itchy skin…

My Horse is on your just add oats, H2oil and Red-Cal.

His face itches and he rubes it on the post in the barn. He has not lost any hair, just itchy. He rubs his face on his leg when I ride him. He has done it over the winter but it gets worse as it gets warmer. It was very itchy last summer.

Thank you, Margaret

I would add the Health Check to help get rid of the “junk” already in the body from past commercial feeds, vaccines dewormers etc.

I would also add the Aller Check to help support the immune system and also consider the Bug Check for sure.

It will all improve over time and I suspect the Aller Check could be discontinued at some point.

Karen’s 35 year-old special needs horse

Dear Dr. Dan,

Five years ago I purchased Just Add Oats, Red-cal, H2Oil for my then 30 yr old Quarter gelding.

He did good on that ration, but has since lost so many teeth he recently choked on oats and my vet told me I can’t feed them any longer.

He now eats Sr pellet 14 percent feed and alfalfa cubes soaked in water.

I have recently begun adding a scoop of calf manna to his pellets to add calories and try to keep some weight on him.  He also is very arthritic in his hind quarters and has some swelling of his knees and hocks.

Can you recommend a feed regiment for my old buddy that might keep weight on but not be such a bulky amount. I worry that I am feeding too much bulk while trying to put weight on him.

Thanks for your help.
Karen, Illinois

Go back to what you were feeding.

Now just soak the oats overnight and add more H2oil for the extra weight.

Also add the Joint Check. The commercial stuff is terrible

Glad we could help DUNCAN…

Dear Dr Dan,

I wanted to thank you and your staff for all the help and guidance you've given me. As you know my ten yr old Akita Duncan was diagnosed with a rare uveo-dermatalogic syndrome in March 2008.

It is a nasty auto-immune syndrome which causes the skin to lose pigmentation, blindness, and terrible skin irritation. My Vet's recommendation was a moderate dose of prednisone which has really bad side affects.

Since speaking w/ you i have put him on your allercheck, jointcheck, omega coatcheck as well as reddox and vita-veg essentials. I also changed him to a holistic diet. NO MORE gluten, bi-products or any "junk" that's in most dog foods.  I know it's hard to see in the pictures, but he has crusty scabs around his nose and in his ears that were painful. After about a month on your products he showed signs of great improvement!

What's best is I also use the marigold pocket healer- this stuff is a MIRACLE! That worked the second I put it on. It helped heal the scabs and took the pain away. I and other family members have also used the marigold healer for various topical uses and it's worked every time.

Needless to say Duncan will stay on this regimen for the rest of his life. Dr. Dan. I can't thank you enough for everything you have done for me and Duncan. You and your wonderful products have put my mind at ease knowing that I can treat my dog with natural products that work and have no side affects.

Thanks again, Lisa C.,

Aural Plaque ???

Dr.Dan,

I am sure my horse has arual plaque(self diagnosed by me and internet info)in one ear. Is this caused by a bug bite,, allergic reation,  what is best to treat this problem, is it chronic? I live in CT.

Thank You

Susan

No one really knows the cause but topically you can use our Grape Balm herbal ointment.

It is ugly and stinks but if anything will help it should. Thanks

My German Shepard, 6 years-old with hip arthritis…

What product would you recommend to treat the above subject pet?  I am
on a budget but would like to keep him going as long as I can.    What
would you recommend–best product for best price.  Thank you for your
advice.

Linda

I would highly suggest our Joint Check for joint support such as you describe.

Elizabeth’s 27 year old TB gelding…

I have a 27 year old TB gelding with a spinal impingement.  only banamine helps but I cannot keep him on banamine much  longer.  when he does not have banamine, he cannot walk more than a few steps and is paralyzed.  I am giving him MSM, B-1 solution and probiotics.
Help because I can only keep him on banamine for a few more days.  I need a strong anti-inflammatory like banamine.

— Elizabeth

I would really suggest our Critical Care Laminitis/Founder product.  There is really no better nutritional anti-inflammatory available.
Even though it says for founder/laminitis, We use it for any situation involving inflammation. this product also preserves the Cox 1 enyme for gut protection. Also, specifically for the Gut our Gut Check is awesome.. it is not just probiotocs but prebiotics and even enzymes to help the gut.
I would also consider a chiropractor, if you have not already.

Dr. Dan on Summer Itch and more…

Hi  Dr. Dan – Doug suggested that I contact you – I’m in Florida and have a horse that gets the “summer itch” – it’s starting already.  He gets whole oats & Platinum & Epic with T&A hay.  It’s not working. What would you suggest?  Also I have another young horse prone to ulcers.  What would you suggest for him?  My horses have 12 hours of grass turnout on crummy Florida grass.

Jeannie M.

For both I suggest the feeding program below (get info at www.WhatToFeedYourHorse.com).

I basically suggest that to oats you add our Just Add oats and our Weight Check supplements. Also Red Cal free choice.

That means available at ALL times. I would also suggest Bug Check for both being in Florida for sure. For the allergy horse definitely the Aller Check supplement too.

And for now also the Health Check to help get rid of the “junk” present already.

The Gut Check for the ulcer horse as well until the better feeding program kicks in. The timothy is fine.

whole oats or crimped?

Hi Dr. Dan,   Hope 2009 finds you healthy and happy!   Well I finally bought my horse.

His name is Perfect, “As Perfect As It Gets” is his registered name, but he is ‘MY’ Perfect.  He is a Tennessee Walker and so sweet. Perfect was born 2/13/2008 and I purchased him Jan. 1, 2009.  AND gelded 12/2008.   In January I boarded him in Celina Texas.  He was in a stall but let out from 6am to 6pm.  The barn owner fed him Purina/Olina grain and coastal hay, plus he was let out in a small pasture with a round ring bale of hay.

I did not like his feeding situation so February I moved him to Aubrey Texas.

He had a huge pasture with a fine shed for covering and the barn owner fed him Strategy grain, and alfalfa hay, with a coastal hay also.  But I did not like the alfalfa hay and how it made him get all charged up.   So March 1, 2009 I moved him about 7 miles from my home and it is partial care.

The barn owner feeds Perfect in the am the feed & grain that I put out for him to eat and I feed him in the evening.  He has a stall with a run and I let him out to a pasture with a buddy from noon until dinner time…… FINALLY I get to feed and take care of my horse.      At the moment I am feeding him a California coastal hay… and it is very soft and green and I really like it and so does Perfect.  Timothy hay is really difficult to find consistently.

So hay wise I think I am going to stick with what I am feeding Perfect, unless you have a suggestion.

I am feeding him Progressive Premium Growth Formula Grain.  I feed him 2-1/2 lbs morning and night.

I think he weighs around 500 lbs…. AND I AM READY TO START HIM ON OATS!

I plan to order: Just Add Oats / $45.99 (10 lbs) H2Oil / $39.99 (1 gal)Bug Check / $28.99 (2 lbs)Red Cal / $75.00
BUT the real question is whole oats or crimped? And how much??????

Kay F.

Sure sounds PERFECT!!!

Answer: Whole oats.

Crimped (hull broken) are only 6 percent more digestibility efficient but once crimped they must be fed fresh because they start to go rancid quickly.

Gradually switch to the same amount of feed now feeding.

Thanks For Asking!

Cinnamon…

I understand that cinnamon promotes sugar and fat metabolism.  My question is: gelatin, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silicia – are these ingredients safe for my horse to ingest?  They are included in the cinnamon.  Thank you for your assistance.  Karen S.

Yes.
But do look at our feeding program “WhatToFeedYourHorse.com” AND our Critical Care Overweight I/R formula on our site and in our magazine. (DrDanMag.com)

Cinnamon alone won’t do much.
